The third edition of "When Your Kidneys Fail" was developed and published by the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. This handbook provides information and is intended for use by people with kidney disease or kidney failure and their families. A new chapter has been added and other chapters have been updated to reflect the changes that have occurred since the first printing in 1982. The question and answer format has been retained. Among the topics covered are the principles of kidney function, methods of treatment, and financial resources available to patients.

With all the ramifications of kidney failure, there is a need for a source of reliable information. This handbook will help to meet the educational needs of the growing population of people afflicted with kidney failure. Although it was written with the patient in mind, family members, friends, and health care professionals will also find this handbook a valuable resource.
