Against the backdrop of McCarthysim and the post WWII rise of America as a major world power, the murder of a German immigrant in a small Mid-west city sparks an investigation that leads Agent Warren Marshall on a chase across Europe. He infiltrates the lives of people from the dead German doctor’s past, In his quest for a solution to his case he forces the remaining members of the group to face each other and interpret the image found. Once alerted the group devises an elaborate plan to throw Marshall off their trail. They regroup in Paris, take stock of the situation, heal old wounds and prepare to move on. As with much of life Marshall catches them on the eve of their escape to Brittany. The evening brings a sharing of truths, a resolution to Warren’s investigation and small stirrings of hope that life will go on. Through the lives of these characters we come to know that we can never unknow the fears that haunt us. Fear informs the way in which we survive.
