After the realization sinks in that a baby is on the way, many parents start thinking about the kind of family they want to make for themselves and their child. Thoughts may turn to childhood memories and other past family experiences. Dreams and hopes for the future begin to take on new shape. A good look at the reality of the current situation helps parents make plans to build on strengths and look beyond for additional support and information.

Try writing down your thoughts. Ask family elders to tell you more about your cultural heritage or family history. Find a parent support group to join. Watch other parents caring for and interacting with their children. Do you like what you see? Would you want to be like them as a parent? Take plenty of time to do all this thinking, dreaming and planning. It's the foundation for good decision making and a valuable step in preparing to become someone's dad or mom. After all, loving and caring for your little one will be the most important thing you will ever do.
