Paul Estronza La Violette has been an oceanographer for almost forty years with the government, Mississippi State University and more recently as a consultant with his own company. He has done his research aboard research aircraft and ships in almost all of the world's oceans, spending most of his time in the Arctic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and, more recently, the Gulf of Mexico.

His past publications have been oceanographic atlases, books and papers on the circulation of the world oceans and seas. This is his first nonscientific publication.

He lives on a beach road in Waveland, Mississippi, with his wife, Stella, their dog, Jennie, and more recently, a black tomcat named Holley.
