You are likely hearing more and more about clinical research. It seems as if every time you turn to a newspaper, radio or television, there is an advertisement for patients to enter a clinical trial. Each week, you probably are questioned by at least a few patients about the benefit of some experimental drug that they are sure will be the answer to their needs.
Americans are being inundated with information about promising new drugs. It is indeed an age in which we believe in the potential of modern medicine to resolve all our physical and emotional ills, if not immediately, then in the near future.
We are becoming used to hearing about experimental drugs and the protocols required for their development. Indeed, increasing numbers of our colleagues are conducting clinical trials. In 1990, there were only about 5,000 physicians and pharmacists who conducted a clinical trial of a new drug. This year [1999], more like 50,000 medical professionals have assumed a role as principal investigator in an experimental drug trial. Clearly, the number of professionals participating in clinical trials is exploding, along with the number of patients in clinical trials and the overall number of trials.
