This was one of my favorite finds last summer. We don't get out on boats much so it was a real treat to be out on the water. And you can't beat the cost-free! The Plover is a restored foot passenger ferry that used to take cannery workers from Blaine to the now defunct Alaska Packers Association Salmon Cannery on Semiahmoo Spit. It is certified to hold seventeen passengers. Bicycles and strollers are accommodated on a space available basis. Passengers can stand on the top deck or sit below and look out the window. Either way, visitors are treated to some wonderful sights. The westbound trip to Semiahmoo takes a little over ten minutes and the return trip about twenty. En route passengers see Blaine's harbor, Mt. Baker, the Canadian Coastal Mountain range, resident harbor seals, plenty of seagulls, and other local water birds such as cormorants and Caspian Terns. I took my four year old and she loved it-especially the baby gulls and seals. I was glad my active eighteen month old was home with Dad. The boat is small and there's not a lot of room to chase a busy toddler.
