In the strong, confident voice of the natural storyteller, Roberta Damon takes the reader through the enchantment of a more innocent time and the rites of passage of both the physical and the spiritual as that era expressed itself in denominational language and the mystical calls of service to others. Through the telling, Damon's skillful slips back and forth through time and her subtle choice of events provide both causes and results to become obvious tools for reader to assess their own stories of pain, suffering, and victory.

Edmond, Oklahoma-Roberta McBride Damon knew her birth mother, Keith, died when she, Damon, was born. She grew up with Mary Lou, stepmother and second mother, the nurse who cared for Damon and her mother in the tiny hospital in Carnegie, Oklahoma, in the mid-1930's. But she was not told of another woman, May Anderson, who became her foster mother for the first two years of her life, undoubtedly saving her. In the mid-1990's, Damon discovered May Anderson and incorporated her into the pantheon of mothers who had made possible her life and survival. Damon's story weaves each woman's story into a rich tapestry of women's stories blended as a powerful biblical fabric in the allusion to Rachel and her children. Lost mothers and lost children meet and part to meet again in stories whose colors slowly merge into the rich clothing of redemption and return.
