Virginia Keys Hughes grew up in a family of good cooks with a rich heritage of recipes and traditions from the Deep South and from the Cajun country of Louisiana. As owner of the popular Gruene General Store in the historic hamlet of Gruene (pronounced Green) in the Texas hill country town of New Braunfels, Virginia has collected recipes from customers and friends from all over the United States. She has included these recipes along with remembrances of her childhood and her family recipes in the Gruene General Store Cookbook.
