Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Fred began caving during graduate school at the Pennsylvania State Univerity. Although a money-strapped student, Fred put up the money to become a founding member of the Butler Cave Conservation Society (BCCS) in 1969.

After receiving his PhD in Astronomy from Penn State in 1973 Fred moved to California and started his career working for various military and government contractors. He rarely missed a trip or meeting of the BCCS despite the cross-country commute.

In 1975, he was part of a team that set a new world depth record in Pierre-St. Martin, France. Two years later, he led the mapping of Proventina Abyss, Greece, and joined Nevin Davis for a two-person reconnaissance of the nearby Tymphe Range.

In 1997 Fred discovered he had colon cancer. He had surgery for the cancer and entered various chemotherapy programs. In the summer of 1998 Fred became President of the National Speleological Society.

Unable to physically enter more than a few feet into a cave during the last couple of years, Fred applied his extraordinary programming talents into the Wakulla Springs Project and wrote most of the code that translates the sonic data, collected by an underwater mapper, into spectacular, three-dimensional maps. He felt once again on the cutting edge of exploration.
