Circumstellar Habitable Zones: Proceedings of the First International Conference was originally published in 1996. It is historic, as it was the first comprehensive volume to focus on the three major aspects of planetary habitability—planetary, astrophysical, and biological—to address the large-scale ecology and long-range habitability of our planet and its setting in the Solar System. The 1994 NASA conference brought together 62 world-class experts in fields as diverse as planetary atmospheres, stellar evolution, microbiology, and many additional disciplines to examine the multitude of factors that define our planetary home and the evolving processes that went into making it habitable. With over 1,000 cited references, it is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in understanding the factors that made and still make our planet and the Sun unique in detail but likely not alone in providing a place of habitation among the stars.

This book is the Thirtieth Anniversary Edition of Circumstellar Habitable Zones. As the publisher, I wanted to make the original content more easily and widely available, but it was obvious that some updates were in order. This Anniversary Edition has undergone extensive changes in the design and layout, but the content of the original articles has been kept intact. The original black and white astronomical photos have been updated with outstanding recent astronomical photos from the James Webb telescope and other major space agencies, as well as other images and infographics from NASA, as they pertain to various articles. The photos and graphics are printed in full color, and explanatory text accompanies the photos. The color infographics reveal specific attributes and chemical compositions of many important astrophysical objects found in other parts of the universe, all addressing the question of habitability in our galaxy and others. This is a unique and valuable, historically important, document and the content is still remarkably relevant today. The Thirtieth Anniversary Edition is also worthy of the description, “keepsake.” With an Appendix that includes an extensive alphabetical list of over 1,000 references to scientifically refereed papers, it is an invaluable resource for historians, as well as for students of planetary science, the astronomical complexity of planetary formation and survival, and biological aspects of habitable zones around other stars, including multi-star systems. It also provides a valuable historical resource for librarians and educational institutions everywhere. With its new design and page layout and 38 color photographs and infographics, including a priceless photo of Dr. Carl Sagan and Dr. Dave Morrison visiting at the conference, and a collage of photos of the conference speakers, this is truly a beautiful book.

Dr. Sagan, as he did throughout his life, made a crucially important point in his Introduction, when he wrote, "I conclude by paying tribute to a particular habitable zone, the only one we’re really sure about—the surface of our own world. It is beautifully appropriate for us. We don’t want to make the mistake of confusing cause and effect. The reason it’s so appropriate is that we’ve evolved on it and are delicately attuned to it. But nevertheless, you might have to go a great many light years to find one as lovely as ours."

He ends with this remark: "The penultimate chapter of Steven Dole’s book [Habitable Planets for Man], written back in the polluting ’60s, was called ‘An Appreciation of the Earth,’ another example of the prescience of our honoree. Surely it is our responsibility to keep this zone habitable."
