The great British writer's poem The Gods of the Copybook Headings provides the Foreword and principal theme for this novel; which deals with the inevitable day of reckoning for those who follow the false Gods of liberal folly, and confronts two of the principal fantasies of the late 20th Century, to wit: (a) The idea that there is anything more important than sexually determined roles in the lives of men and women; and (b) that a Welfare State is capable of being fixed; in a riveting tale of intrigue, voluptuosity and violence, as the Welfare State breaks down.

Charles Daniel Stuart is running for the U.S. Senate from Virginia as an independent conservative on an anti-Feminist, politically "incorrect" platform--better suited to the 18th than the 20th Century. He is gaining ground, but is vulnerable because of a brawling, womanizing past.

Maggie Robertson, Sarah Lawrence '92, pretty, intelligent, young feminist journalist, is assigned by the New York Times to cover the race. Although considered the perfect antidote to the Virginia Neanderthal, Maggie is troubled because she is not sure that she has an answer to Stuart's rhetoric. She must also come to grips with her own healthy libido and with challenges to her journalistic integrity; and throughout the novel wrestles with questions of values and priorities. Along the way, she displays her pluck in some truly awkward situations.

The novel contains a series of torrid encounters, which also serve to punctuate numerous romantic sub-plots.

Congress is trying to salvage a collapsing Welfare State, while major world banks prepare to withdraw funds before a coming chaos. Ex-C.I.A. operatives, on both the right and left, secretly maneuver for advantage in the expected crisis; while the girls at Michelle's, an upscale brothel in Virginia, frequented by men of power and influence, report a sudden increase in demands for the very weird and kinky. In addition, the author has included, as an Appendix, a negative critique of the feminist movement entitled Women Hostage To Contrived Delusion (Pages 613-636)

From Chapter 12: "You aren't telling me that Josephson has gotten hold of that rednecked pimp, whom I kept from beating up a poor mountain girl in Phil Luckey's old joint? Would they dare quote such a source?" But he remembered his conversation with Logan Lewis.

He had been worrying about how to handle the charge of being a "notorious womanizer," which they had been expecting from Muggeridge and/or the Washington Post. It was ironic, how much more serious could be the unexpected, never discussed threat, now surfacing. And in an instant, his mood had both hit bottom and bounced defiantly.

From Chapter 3: For a second only, he fingered the waist band of the under garment, wavered, and then to that extent relented. And then, with force enough to really sting but not to injure, he gave her the first real spanking of her life.

From Chapter 4: And as she looked out across the open valley...with the celestial glow illuminating the dim contours of the distant mountains; Maggie knew that she would submit to whatever he intended: Not so much as a submission of woman to man--or even of this one woman to this one unique man--but as an obeisance to a moment, which might never come again; an obeisance of this woman to her very soul.
