10 Biblical Traits to Guide In-Law Relationships

In 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, the apostle Paul mentions 10 biblical traits that should guide our relationships. We have applied them to the in-law relationship.

  1. Be patient with yourself, your spouse, your in-laws, and even God as you navigate making these relationships stronger and healthier.
  2. Always speak and act kindly toward your in-laws and speak kindly about them to others.
  3. Resist the urge to be jealous of your in-laws.
  4. Be willing to listen to what your in-laws have to say and do not let pride keep you from doing so.
  5. Show respect and honor to your in-laws by caring about their perspectives.
  6. Be willing to compromise at times and do your best to pursue peace for all parties.
  7. Assume the best of your in-laws but also be willing to address issues in a healthy way when they arise.
  8. Fight against resentment by being honest with your spouse about any issues.
  9. Protect your marriage and the peace in your home by collaborating with your spouse to create healthy boundaries with your extended family.
  10. Keep praying for your marriage and family and hold onto the hope that God is the God of restoration and peace.
