Throw in a burgeoning relationship between a flirtatious Night Porter with doubts about the age-gap and a much younger Receptionist, who throughout her young life had always chosen to end up with the wrong sort of man; and you then have a recipe for tension, suspicion and self-doubt on both sides.

Mix in a varied selection of guests. Two of these spend their time at the Hotel in rather an unusual way, whilst two more (both women) cause staff members to speculate as to their relationship. Add in the comings and goings of others who sometimes behave in ways not expected of them, as well as a tragic suicide and you then begin to see just what life is like Down at the Riverside.
