It is a boomerang. This and thousands of other words that are interesting, unusual and sometimes obscure are defined simply and succinctly in The English Wordsmith. Author David Andrew was a collector of words. Whenever he found a word or phrase he liked, but didn t quite understand, he jotted it down. Over his lifetime he collected thousands words and phrases. He often joked: Taking information from one source is plagiarism. Taking it from many is original research. David called the collection a lexical eclecsis ; lexical meaning to do with words, eclecsis meaning a compilation from various sources. Definitions for words from aa to zymurgy are laid out clearly, creating a tubby tome of 592 pages. Chosen words span the common, the not-so common and include Latin, French and German imports. A portmanteau is a case with two compartments, from the French porter to carry and manteau a cloak, is well known. Less well know maybe is a portmanteau word meaning one word that is a blend of two words, such as brunch which is part breakfast and part lunch. Explanations include the correct context for frequently misused words such as masterful and masterly, continual and continuous, suppositious and supposititious. The light touch extends to definitions of words and expressions taken from specialist subject areas such as philosophies, religions, peoples, artists, myths, animals, plants, food, drink and the law. David Andrews was an eminent lawyer, who wrote several authoritative challenging works, dealing with complex legal issues. The English Wordsmith was completed shortly before his death in 2010.
