House of the Dead is a collection of poems triggered by the death of the author's mother which finds a wider echo within the break up of the local Protestant community of Sandy Row, Belfast, where the author grew up. The poems subsequently resonate within the larger context of the Northern Ireland Troubles, where the role of the poet in times of war is repeatedly called into question. In its essence, this very focused collection is a tribute to those who have suffered, those on the 'cutting edge', and ultimately, its intrinsic dialectic indicates an alternative to the violence of communal strife.
Born in 1953 in Sandy Row, Belfast, Stephen Rowley left Northern Ireland in 1972 to study English at university in England. He obtained a PhD from Manchester University in 1979 and is at present Professor of English at Artois University, France, where he is also currently Vice Rector in charge of International Affairs.
