ALEXANDER GATES is the chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University and a member of the graduate faculty of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has organized major earth science exhibits at the Newark Museum and the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City; leads the annual field trips of the Geological Association of New Jersey; serves as science advisor to the Palisades Interstate Park Commission and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference; appears as a principal expert on the WNJN television documentary, The Highlands Rediscovered (2004); and has authored 150 professional volumes and papers on the tectonics of the Appalachians and Piedmont, as well as popular reference works, such as Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
