Steve Whitehead is one of the leading English realist painters of his generation. A painter of landscapes, cities and figures, his work draws on diverse traditions, from American Photorealism, to German Romanticism and English Surrealism, to create images that are both familiar and strange. In this new study Michael Paraskos explores the influences that have helped to create Whiteheads art, and places him in a critical context as one of the new generation of aesthetic realist painters who are revolutionising British painting. The book is lavishly illustrated in full colour.
Michael Paraskos studied art history at the University of Leeds and for his PhD, on the aesthetic theories of Herbert Read, at the University of Nottingham. As well as teahcing at Leeds and Nottingham universities, and was Head of Art History for Fine Art at the University of Hull from 1994 to 2000. He has published widely on contemporary and historic art and literature, and is the editor of the book Re-Reading Read: New Critical Views on Herbert Read (London: Freedom Press, 2008). In 2007 he was the Henry Moore Fellow in Sculpture Studies at the University of Leeds, and he is now Director of Programmes at the Cyprus College of Art.
