This book tells you about the design of modern time. Time organises everything we do. Time meters our sleeping, working, resting, study, leisure, industry, meeting, celebration, meditation, worship and travel; it measures our birth, life and death ;it regulates simple actions and complex processes; it calibrates our heartbeat. As time becomes ever more critical and we move quickly to 'save' time and 'make' time, we can pause to look back at how time has been designed. Time is communicated through timekeeping and time outputting devices which we call clocks and watches: timepieces. Without time railways cannot function, because railways exist to sell safe travel and this requires precise standardised time. Railway time is consistent, reliable, uniform. It drives the passenger announcement, the flow of trains and is visible throughout the travel spaces where people and movement come together.
