Maritime textbook for students of navigation and ship handling. Parallel indexing (PI) is a simple and effective way of continuously monitoring a ship's progress along its charted course using radar. The major advantage of PI is that it can be operated either by day or night, in any weather conditions, including restricted visibility, provided a radar conspicuous navigational mark is available. Most watch-keeping officers have used PI in its simplest form during the normal course of their duties, possibly being unaware of its full potential as a monitoring aid. In this still popular and relevant publication the authors aim to draw attention to the benefit of PI in the many situations which arise during coastal navigation. The prudent mariner will thoroughly familiarise himself with the technique in clear weather and safe conditions before attempting its use in confined and difficult passages in restricted visibility.
This is a reprint of the 1979 edition of "Parallel Indexing Techniques", first published by Stanford Maritime.
