He started as a journalist before the war, joining the army in 1939. During the war, "he drew cartoons of his comrades training, off duty and later at war, when he was commissioned and seconded to the King's African Rifles and fought with them in Burma. Some of these .cartoons were published in service magazines at the time but are now published in a book for the first time. His account of his wartime experiences is a delight. .In 1950 and home again, he began writing and illustrating a highly successful series of humorous books on horses, dogs and sporting and rural life; the first being Tickner's Light Horse [followed by Ticker's Dog Licence, Tickner's Showpiece and many others].
