This publication accompanies the major exhibition Alberto Giacometti: A Line Through Time at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (23 April-29 August 2016). Giacometti is one of the twentieth century's most significant artists, celebrated as a sculptor, painter and draughtsman. The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the artist's death and features over 150 works with significant loans from around the world including Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Fondation Beyeler, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Fitzwilliam Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and many private collections. These loans complement the Sainsbury Centre's own remarkable collection of Giacometti's works, the largest in the UK. The Centre is particularly noted for its fine group of drawings acquired by Robert and Lisa Sainsbury. The publication reflects the exhibition narrative with sections on Giacometti's ancient and non-Western sources of inspiration, his patronage and his relationship with the Sainsburys, his use of materials and processes, and his influence on British art. There are in-depth essays written by the curators of the exhibition, Claudia Milburn and Calvin Winner. The first explores Giacometti's work in relation to the cultural condition and intellectual climate of post-war Paris. This essay discusses notions of freedom of expression and materiality relating Giacometti to his French contemporaries, notably Jean Dubuffet and Jean Fautrier. The second essay addresses Giacometti's impact on a generation of British artists including Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, William Turnbull, Eduardo Paolozzi, Elisabeth Frink, Frank Auerbach, Henry Moore and Isabel Rawsthorne. The title, A Line through Time, references the timeless nature of Giacometti's endeavour and the enduring resonance of his practice.
Claudia Milburn is a Curator at the Sainsbury Centre. She has wide-ranging interests, but is especially concerned with modern drawings and the work of Alberto Giacometti.
Calvin Winner is Head of Collections at the Sainsbury Centre, and a specialist in Modern art. He was a lead curator in the Sainsbury Centre s highly acclaimed exhibition of 2014-2015, Francis Bacon and the Masters.
