The Wilder Men's Domestic Abuse Program was developed in 1981 by the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation Community Assistance Program located in St. Paul, Minnesota, in close cooperation with the county community corrections department and family courts. The program provides men with education and support to help them identify, reduce, and eliminate violent behaviors in their relationships. It uses a combination of therapeutic approaches to confront values, attitudes, and behaviors toward women and others, especially in the areas of violence, abuse, power, control, and manipulation.
The Wilder Men's Domestic Abuse Program has been featured in Life, in the Lee Grant documentary, Battered, and on the Phil Donahue Show. In addition, the staff have provided experiential training for professionals from around the United States, Canada, Germany, Guam, Iceland, and Puerto Rico.
This guide and its accompanying participant's workbook, On the Level, distill the best of fifteen years of experience by one of the nation's largest, most comprehensive programs for men who have perpetrated domestic violence. Social workers, domestic abuse treatment programs, probation offices, and counselors in allied fields will find this a complete guide to facilitating a domestic abuse treatment program with time-proven success.
This 240-page guide contains twenty-nine activities, detailed guidelines for presenting each one, and a discussion of the psychological issues that arise out of each activity. Also included are tips for intake and individual counseling, facilitating groups, cofacilitation, working with resistant clients, counseling diverse groups of men, and recommended policies and releases.
The 160-page participant's workbook contains forty-nine worksheets to accompany the activities, including mid-term and final evaluations. The workbook is designed so that participants in the program can keep a record of their insights and progress as they build a new foundation for violence-free living. (Workbook sold separately.)
