Topics

• Addressing serious injuries and fatalities: For decades, safety has emphasized achieving low incident rates without recognizing severity potential. Several chapters challenge this focus with the concept that reducing incident frequency does not ensure prevention of serious injuries and fatalities.
• Risk assessments: Every safety practitioner should understand that performing risk assessments is a proven method for identifying potential problems. Hazard identification and analyses and risk assessments are at the core of prevention through design.
• Prevention through design: The most effective, economical way to address hazards and risk is doing so early in the design process and taking action to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
• Acceptable risk: The practice of safety requires embracing the concept of acceptable risk as a goal.
• Occupational safety and health management systems: Employers should have processes in place for continual improvement to identify and evaluate hazards; identify and improve system deficiencies; and eliminate, reduce or control risks to an acceptable level.
