Hartzell discusses the importance of control, describes the attributes of influential people, and provides concrete suggestions for building a power base in secondary schools. He emphasizes the importance of a strong relationship with the principal and suggests methods for influencing teachers, students, and community members. Acknowledging that influence has its price, the author includes several self-assessment tools to help librarians decide whether or not they are ready for the responsibilities that power brings. Although the pedagogical style and condescending tone may put off some of the intended audience, Hartzell (a university professor and former high-school principal who feels he is qualified to tell librarians what to do because he is an outsider to the profession) offers much good advice that can benefit new school librarians as well as seasoned professionals feeling out of the loop.
