A title in the Studies in Literature series 1500-1800 edited by Robert Uphaus. The critical and scholarly engagement with Shakespeare's work, primarily began with Nicholas Rowe's 1709 edition and culminated in the comprehensive efforts of the Boswell-Malone edition of 1821. This period saw the establishment of foundational academic practices, including the development of a chronological biography, textual criticism using early printed versions. Rowe's edition is considered the starting point for modern Shakespeare scholarship, as it was the first to be based on early printed texts and included the first systematic biography, despite the biography's inaccuracies. Malone was a key figure in the late 18th century; he meticulously studied and corrected the work of previous scholars, laying the groundwork for the comprehensive Boswell-Malone edition. Boswell was a significant contributor to the monumental 1821 edition of the complete works, which represented a culmination of over a century of scholarly effort. The "romantic critics" of a later era, such as Schlegel and Tieck, ultimately engaged with Shakespeare through the very textual and scholarly frameworks established during this period. Book has no wear and is fine. The boards will be protected with a new inert 100 micron archival sleeve which is removable.
