FROM THE AUTHORS INTRODUCTION: Perhaps at first the land was a challenge, a thing to possess and to conquer, but along the way. the conquerors themselves became the possessed. The land became a part of their very souls. Thus was the story of America -- of the western frontiers -- of South Texas. In many cases, the more forbidding the prize, the greater the reward of pursuit. The men and women who successfully claimed the stubborn land for their own were rugged, though not necessarily rough, and invincibly determined. They and their descendants are bound together by the sometimes harsh realities of the land they cherish. It is in their blood, a part of their heritage. -- Diane Solether Smith.
