The inspiring story of the New Orleans Saints 2009-2010 football season that culminated with the winning of the Super Bowl. The book explains how the struggling NFL team and the storm-weary people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast lifted one another s spirits and fortunes in the post-Hurricane Katrina years, 2006 2010. The narrative is a study in contrasting moods, ranging from the depression and despair that come with being victims of the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, to the euphoria that accompanies the winning of the Super Bowl after 43 years of mostly losing seasons.

Even before Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans in the summer of 2005, it wasn t looking very good for the home team. The Saints were mired in mediocrity. Their recent win-loss record wasn t so great. Their quarterback was inconsistent. Their defense wasn t scaring anybody. And the team s owner was talking seriously about moving the team to San Antonio. Indeed, it appeared that the Saints were as good as gone. Then came the storm of the century and the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. It killed more than 1,800 Gulf Coast residents, including some 1,464 in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina s tidal surge caused numerous breaches in the levees and seawalls that protected the city. The ensuing flood drowned many defenseless residents including the elderly and disabled, trapped untold numbers of people in their attics, and left 80 percent of the city under water. Before the storm hit, the Saints evacuated to Fremont, Calif., then to San Antonio. They ended up not playing any home games in New Orleans in the 2005 season because of extensive storm damage to the Superdome. While the Saints were in San Antonio, the talk of permanently relocating the team intensified to a fever pitch. The idea that the team would become known as the San Antonio Saints upset and depressed Saints fans throughout the Gulf Coast. The Saints did come home to New Orleans after a dismal season. But, still, it wasn t looking so good for the home team. Then a ray of hope appeared with the hiring of Coach Sean Payton. More hope came with the acquisition of quarterback Drew Brees, then star running back Reggie Bush and other top-notch prospects like Jahri Evans and Marques Colston.Hope springs eternal for NFL fans everywhere. Such was the case among the doubly burdened people of New Orleans as they hoped and prayed that they and their beloved city and football team would rise from the depths together.
