GEORGIA HEARD received her MFA in Poetry from Columbia University. She is one of the founders of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University, where she was an adjunct professor and a staff developer in NYC schools. She has published dozens of books on poetry and writing, along with several children’s poetry books, and her poems have been widely anthologized in magazines and books. She has also served on the committee for the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. She gives workshops and keynotes at conferences in the US and around the world. She lives in South Florida with her husband and son.

Introduction

When I was a graduate student in poetry writing at Columbia University, I started a women’s poetry reading group with my friend Marie Howe. We tacked a ﬂyer on the wall of Dodge Hall announcing the time and place of our ﬁrst meeting. We expected, at the very most, a handful of women to show up. Twenty women from the writing program arrived on a cold, windy night to read the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Elizabeth Bishop, among others. We were encouraged by the inspiration and courageous voices of other women poets. But it went deeper than that. There was an undercurrent of excitement and empowerment as we wrote our own poems, inspired by the words of poet and activist Muriel Rukeyser: “What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open.” The experiences and truths found in the poems in The Woman in this Poem have the power to split our worlds open.

In choosing poems for this anthology, I looked for poems about women’s lives, dreams, thoughts, and experiences. I chose some poems because they cut through our safety nets, piercing the ﬁlm of familiarity of our ordinary lives, as well as poems that might aﬃrm our experiences and feelings and make us feel less alone.

The anthology features poetry by a diverse range of poets, including poets I have long admired, such as Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood, Mary Oliver, and Sylvia Plath. I also had the pleasure of discovering new poets whose poems I hadn’t been aware of or whose poems hadn’t even been written when I was a student. I chose poems speciﬁcally to speak to women about their lives and the many roles they play. In a world where women are frequently under- or misrepresented and often objectiﬁed, I wanted to create an anthology that shines a spotlight on women’s voices. Although there are countless poems written by men that speak to women’s experiences, I decided in the end to include only poems written by women because I wanted to share with readers the voices of women poets as they spoke about our universal experiences.

I hope the poems in this book will bring you the same inspiration, comfort, and feelings of empowerment that the group of us discovered on that cold, windy night many years?ago.
