In the words of Wilson Duff, his interpretation of this unique exhibition is "more art than archaeology". It is "more an exhibit of images than of arti- facts as such . . . the primary criterion is an aesthetic one." Duff freely admits to employing a great deal of artistic licence which he terms a "hazardous exercise for one who values a reputation for scholarly discipline . . . but a risk worth taking." Indeed. IMAGES: STONE: B.C. is a sensuous appreciation. As well as contemplation by the eye, it is understanding through touch and realization through imagination. Stone has been chosen since time began, the medium to preserve universal truths, to triumph over eternity and time, to reject death. Ever present is the duality of sex reflected in the stone images, the essence of man's self. That which is reflected is op- posite, yet the same, At times the artifact becomes its image, for the image is stronger than the functional purpose. The exhibition - of carefully chosen images - "consists of 136 of the most singularly striking stone sculptures of the native Indian people of the pre-white Northwest Coast". It is thirty centuries of thought preserved in stone. This book is a "shared task" revealing the sensitive and skillful photography of Hilary Stewart, herself an established author and artist, and the aesthetic yet authoritative interpretation of Professor Wilson Duff, Anthropologist of the University of British Columbia, combined by the careful guidance and understanding of Richard Simmins, Director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
