This book, produced by Made in the USA Foundation, whose goal is "a significant reduction of the U.S. trade deficit," has set out to wean consumers from foreign goods with its guide to the "best products America has to offer." In each of 18 chapters devoted to commodity groups ranging from bicycles and musical instruments to home appliances, Foundation staff discuss producers they consider the "best," describe some of their wares, and delineate how much of their line is actually made in the United States. Comparisons between brands and prices are rare, and for some products readers will find only a listing of manufacturers. The three chapters (trucks, wine and beer, and toys) written by independent authors tend to be more item-specific. This provides too little information on individual products to aid significantly in purchase decisions, but will supplement the annual Consumer Reports Buying Guide Issue for those wanting to identify goods made in the United States. To be updated annually.
