Rutler's dissertation on the essential symbolic value of the male priesthood came in response to the Anglican ordination of two women to the priesthood in 1971 and the ongoing disputation over their validity, which would escalate with the ordination of the 'Philadelphia Eleven' to the priesthood in 1974.
