Inhaltsangabe

From Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony to the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, Otago is a distinctive entity whose residents are proud of their heritage and their hardy lifestyles.

With the discovery of gold in 1861 at Gabriels Bully, people, capital and confidence poured into the province, and Dunedin established itself as the country's commercial hub. The goldrush was shortlived, but there was a different kind of treasure on the green pastures, and when the SS Dunedin sailed from Port Chalmers in 1882 with the first refrigerated cargo of mutton, the New Zealand economy was insured for the next 80 years.

In the 1990s Otago re-emerged as a key to the nation's wealth, this time as the focus of the tourism industry, with Queenstown billing itself as the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere. Famous for its Scottish traditions, Otago has reinvented itself as a lively outdoors place that also likes to party after nightfall, ad the Dunedin Sound attests.

Heart of Gold is more than an introduction to Otago's colorful history. It is also author Ian Dougherty's personal response to the people and places of this most photogenic wing of the New Zealand gallery. In Central Otago you will almost certainly be awed and even hunbled by the land.

South Island folklore has it that the welcome is warmer the further wouth you go. This book explains why the residents of Otago, from Dunedin to Dunstau and the goldfields, believe that they live in the golden heart of the country
