Inhaltsangabe

Diderot is widely praised as a master of lively, dramatic and original dialogue. This book studies the developing role of dialogue in his early writings (1745 to 1754). Diderot's earlier experiments with the dialogue form, meticulously charted and analysed by D. J. Adams, opened the way to the exploration of human communication and cooperation which lies at the heart of the Encyclopédie. At first for Diderot dialogue ended in the triumph of monologue, with one speaker reducing another to silence. But one of his central problems was precisely that of solipsism. Is it possible for people to communicate effectively with each other? By engaging with this problem in his early writings Diderot gradually came to realise the epistemological importance of true dialogue as an escape from the solipsistic trap; and, slowly and hesitantly, he developed the form of communicative dialogue which was to flourish in the masterpieces of his later years.

Hardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Sehr gut. 216 p. Lediglich der Schutzumschlag ist leicht berieben. Sonst aber ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ Only the dust jacket is slightly rubbed. Otherwise, however, a very good and clean copy. - Praise of Diderot as a writer of lively, dramatic and original dialogue is a critical commonplace - whether in the extended form of Le Neveu de Rameau or in the passages of conversation which are to be found almost everywhere in his works. Yet little attention has been paid to the role of dialogue in the early writings produced between 1745 and 1754 - the subject of this study. In these early writings dialogue is at first used to enable one speaker to reduce an opponent to silence, that is, to bring about the triumph of monologue. But Diderot gradually comes to use dialogue for genuine debate, in which no one speaker is allowed to overwhelm the others. This progress in the direction of true dialogue is bound up with Diderot's engagement with a problem central to these early works - that of solipsism. David Adams traces Diderot's growing realisation that dialogue, with its concomitant sharing of experience, may offer a solution to the solipsist trap. Diderot's understanding, developed in his early works, of the epistemological importance of dialogue, thus opened the way for the exploration of the possibilities of human communication and cooperation which lie at the heart of the Encyclopédie. The works of Diderot discussed in this book are: Essai sur le Mérite et la Vertu (1745); Pensées philosophiques (1746); La Promenade du Sceptique (1747); Les Bijoux indiscrets (1748); Lettre sur les Aveugles (1749); Lettre sur les Sourds et Muets (1751); Suite de l'Apologie de l'Abbé de Prades (1752); and L'Interpretation de la Nature (1753- 1754). David Adams' meticulous examination of these writings charts the movement from Diderot's initial distrust of the dialogue to his appreciation of its real philosophical and human significance. David Adams was trained at the University of Manchester and has taught at Hull University. He is now Lecturer in French Studies in the University of Manchester. His first book was La Femme dans les contes et les romans de Voltaire (Paris, 1974). An expert bibliographer, he has written a number of articles on Diderot and on eighteenth- century literature.
