This book is an extraordinarily beautiful rendering by Ismail Hakki Bursevi on passages of Ibn 'Arabi's Futuhat al-Makkiyaa - interwoven with his own commentary. It describes the progression and transformation of the 'knower' (gnostic) or 'lover' through the stages and states of knowledge that may be encountered on the 'three journeys' towards and in Union with the 'Beloved'. "Now there is a thing one should know, and that is that the man of gnosis should know his place of beginning and his place of return; where he came from and where he is going; and the knowledge of this is tied to three journeys. . .Unless a man has travelled through these three journeys he cannot understand his self and cannot find in himself the necessary feeling of knowledge towards his Creator, neither can he ripen, nor can he lead others." He outlines the states and forms that the gnostic may encounter and indicates a way of journeying without becoming tied to any one understanding or belief. “The Beloved that the lover is in love with, whatever quality He adorns Himself with, whatever garment He dresses Himself in, never gets confused and does not get attached to any single face. Though he himself sees the beauty from every face, he excuses those who get tied up with one of His faces. His circle is large,” For the one who is ready to look into the depth of his or her own being, to the kernel of the kernel which is their essence, this book is invaluable.
