Jan Farquharson, poet and playwright, was born in Hampstead in 1934, of Scottish and Jewish descent. He was educated at Marborough College and Christ Church, Oxford. He worked briefly in radio in Paris, then returned to England as a teacher of drama and literature at Farnham Art College, at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, and in the Drama Department of Exeter University. He died of cancer in February 2001, and is buried at Branscombe, Devon.
