Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - FOREWORD -- The conviction behind this book is that the Roman mind is still at work, profoundly influencing, in ways we are not always aware of, our politics, our diplomacy, our art literature, our religious and philosophical attitudes, and our law. The Romans have a double claim upon our attention: as relevant to us, and as important in themselves. The Epilogue discusses their relevance to modem America; here the focus is on the Romans as important in themselves. -- Three things tend to conceal that importance from modern students: an all-too-rare, brief, and necessarily elementary exposure to Latin in school; a view of the Romans as soulless imitators of the Greeks; and an overwillingness to accept either the Romans' assessment of themselves as somewhat unattractive Puritans, or Hollywoods picture of them as sadistic, pleasure-mad indulgers in orgies. -- First: country-wide, only about seven in every hundred students now have any firsthand acquaintance with the Roman mind at work, and most of these abandon the subject after two years. Having applied themselves, with more or less devotion and success, to mastering the structure of a sophisticated, complex language, they are then forced by other claims, some legitimate, some not, to stop Latin just at the moment when they might begin to derive both pleasure and profit from going deeper into intellectual history of a fascinating and important people. Meanwhile, such knowledge of the Romans as most Americans possess is derived second-hand from books like this, which is perhaps better than nothing, but still a pity.
