Inhaltsangabe

In 1974 the Chattooga River became the first river East of the Mississippi to be included in the National Wild and Scenic River System. It was included because it was a clean, free-flowing mountain stream located in a relatively undeveloped mountain environment. Forming part of the Georgia-South Carolina Border, the Chattooga is the only free-flowing portion of the Savannah River System. This book gives a comprehensive overview of the river including the topography, physiography and geology, weather and climate, human history, plant life, wildlife, and recreation opportunities.

Introduction

The Chattooga River begins as springs and rivulets high on the impressive southern flank of Whiteside mountain, near Cashiers, North Carolina, at the crest of the eastern continental divide, and flows roughly fifty miles to the upper Piedmont, forming the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina for much of its length. In its descent, the Chattooga pours over rocky ledges and plunges down steep, gorge-bound rapids, first falling precipitously, then slowing and gathering itself in quiet pools beneath the hemlock, laurel and rhododendron until it falls again-in the classic fashion of a mountain river-alternately whispering and thundering its way toward the sea. Even though it lies comparatively close to major urban areas, the river environment retains an unspoiled, primitive character that is unsurpassed in Southeastern states. It is one of the East's longest and largest free-flowing mountain rivers still relatively unaltered by human hands, flowing though unbroken forests, usually out of sight of farms, fields, houses, roads or any other sings of commercial, agricultural or residential development.
