Inhaltsangabe

This book blends theory and practice to support courses in corporate social responsibility (CSR), business and society, and environmental management and sustainability. Based on her extensive work with companies, the author offers engaging readings and teaching cases that address key challenges for business today - measurement, supply chain management, public policy, and stakeholder pressures. Part I focuses on the macro-level and provides an overview of concepts such as the green economy, eco-industrial parks, corporate social responsibility (corporate citizenship), nanotechnology, and sustainable consumption. Part II provides specific frameworks and tools for sustainability management and measurement at the company level. Part III includes detailed teaching cases of several well-known firms. The main theme is that business is a key player in achieving a more sustainable development, yet its practices are often narrow in focus or shortsighted. The text provokes discussions around issues such as: Is business sustainability possible in a market economy focused on increasing consumption? Should a product or service be called "green" when it puts at risk the health and safety of workers? What can U.S. policymakers learn from their European counterparts when it comes to protecting human health and the environment? How can we ensure that the benefits of nanotechnology exceed its risks? How can sustainability indicators be used as a tool to advance sustainability by companies and policymakers? The book provides a flexible, up-to-date supplementary teaching tool for undergraduate and graduate students, executive education courses, and certificate programs. Intended Audience: Primarily undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in environmental management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability, or business and society; as a supplementary text in professional education and certificate programs in environmental management, corporate citizenship, sustainability, and CSR.

IN PRAISE OF "In Business, Environment and Society: Themes and Cases we have a well-balanced compendium of thoughtful chapters on the kind of business responsibility that lies at the heart of sustainability. The book broadly covers the intersection of environmental management and corporate social responsibility and provides a conceptual perspective, an analytical framework, and the concreteness of solid business case studies. From discussions of eco-industrial parks and sustainable consumption to descriptions of corporate citizenship and community engagement, this is a book that will inform business managers, encourage policy makers, and provide hope for a safer economy." —Ken Geiser, Professor Emeritus, University of Massachusetts Lowell 'Business, Environment and Society provides a comprehensive and in-depth examination of major trends in business sustainability in the United States. Well written and researched, this book is a great teaching resource and reference for researchers and others involved in implementing sustainability in businesses, institutions, and communities. It raises challenging questions for students and businesses to examine and address as they pursue their sustainability goals. The case studies provide excellent examples of companies that are pursuing corporate sustainability strategies. The focus on quantitative measurement is critical to our ability to understand and evaluate the impacts of sustainability initiatives." —Terri Goldberg, Executive Director, Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA) "Finally, here is a practitioner-oriented book that focuses on actual case studies in a way that illustrates how businesses are effectively building sustainability as a major component of core business strategy and performance in this ever-changing global economy. The book will be instructive in building the skills, capabilities, and language that all students will require, regardless of their field of study or future career choice. Sustainability can no longer be the job of the Sustainability, EHS, and CSR departments; it needs to be everyone's job. Our economies, our communities, and our planet need talented future leaders equipped with the tools and knowledge to make a real difference, and this book is a wonderful first step to help guide them on their learning journey." —Mark F. Buckley, VP Environmental Affairs, Staples Inc."This text is an excellent supplemental reader for graduate and undergraduate courses on sustainability and the business-society relationship. It brings together a wide range of illuminating and accessible case studies and articles on environmental management and corporate social responsibility, and includes some original pieces not published elsewhere. The contributions highlight the challenges and opportunities business faces as it deals with the complex and evolving relationship between business, society, and government regarding key environmental issues of our time." —David Levy, Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Research, College of Management, University of Massachusetts, Boston Director, Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Regional Competitiveness "The fundamental premise of this book is that sustainability is a 'systems issue.' Looking through different lenses, the chapters consider the challenges and opportunities of sustainability: those of health and safety, employee engagement, risk mitigation, and market opportunities. But they all have in common the basic premise that how we manage business, how we conserve natural resources, and how we treat the people in our workforce and our communities are factors that cannot be considered in isolation. Using a historical perspective, research data, and real-world cases, Veleva provides a concrete foundation for understanding the role of sustainability in today's business strategies." —Kathrin Winkler, Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, EMC Corp.
