// Claes Oldenburg: An Anthology celebrates one of America's most distinguished, innovative and popular artists, whose diverse body of work has, for over thirty years, continued to challenge our view of the ordinary and the everyday. As demonstrated in his writings, performances, drawings and sculpture, Claes Oldenburg has developed a witty and audacious visual vocabulary, which arises from his profound fascination with the minutiae of life, and ranges in scale from the intimate to the monumental. By consciously subverting material, scale and character, Oldenburg intensifies the presence of objects, penetrating their surface to establish their hidden value and creating mysterious and sensuous works of art. This exhibition is a long-awaited survey of the full range of Oldenburg's artistic preoccupations, beginning with works from The Street and The Store, which express the vitality of contemporary urban culture, and following through to the large-scale projects, exuberant public sculptures which elicit a sense of great municipal pride. In turning the commonplace into the monumental, Oldenburg imbues objects with a poetry and humour of epic proportions. Since 1976, Claes Oldenburg has collaborated with the art historian and writer, Coosje van Bruggen, on the large-scale projects, which now number twenty-six. Installed on public sites across America and Europe, these works are the result of years of rigorous research and planning. Oldenburg's aesthetic and van Bruggen's conceptual concerns achieve an ideal balance and dynamism that is rarely witnessed in artistic or community partnerships. Both feel that art should spill out of discrete gallery spaces into the public domain, where it acquires a universal significance. The Hayward Gallery is particularly pleased to present the first major exhibition of Oldenburg's work in Britain since his solo show at the Täte Gallery in 1970. Oldenburg's affinity with this country and, in particular, London, was triggered by his first visit here in 1966, after which he produced a series of proposals for colossal monuments for the city. Playful and daring, they envisaged the replacement of Eros in Piccadilly Circus with a drill bit and Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square with a gearstick. Although none of the proposals was realised, in the longer term they served as precursors of the large-scale projects. Oldenburg's work has also appeared in numerous group exhibitions in Britain over the years-notably Pop Art at the Hayward Gallery (1969); A Bottle of Notes and Some Voyages (1988), at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, The Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture, Leeds, the Serpentine Gallery, London and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Museum, Swansea; and American Art in the Twentieth Century at the Royal Academy (1991). In 1993, Britain secured its first Oldenburg/van Bruggen large-scale project in the form of A Bottle of Notes, which is permanently sited in Middlesbrough town centre.
