Subsequent chapters describe in detail each of the four days of intense combat using French, German, and American sources and American personal accounts.

DOUGLAS V. JOHNSON II is research professor of national security affairs, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.The late ROLFE L. HILLMAN, JR., retired in the rank of colonel from active duty with the U.S. Army in 1972. In his retirement years he began this full-scale study of the Battle of Soissons.
