Explains a method of designing systems, products, and modules whose specifications do not change over the life of the product, though it allows changes in specifications during the design process and is applicable to products and services that are subject to some degree of unpredictable variations in their components It also can be used to develop such non-hardware items as algorithms that must work with random inputs, an example of which would be an investment strategy for the financial industry that maximizes the probability of return in a given range. Suitable for product developers and design engineers. The accompanying CD-ROM contains simulation files and software that run in either Windows or Macintosh. This package introduces a graphical design method that aims to let the reader "centre" or adjust the specifications of their design in order to achieve the best overall system performance. The book also aims to help improve the speed, cost-effectiveness and quality of designs using the mu-sigma graph technique, a design method that shows how to use computer simulation to identify internal system requirements and relate a parameter's mean value to its allowed standard deviation. It presents a methodology for determining failure rates for non-Gaussian distributions, explores various computer modelling techniques, and process capability indices, and examines the relationship between mu-sigma graphs and the conventional Taguchi methods of quality improvement.
Peter Vizmuller is president of RHR Laboratories, a developer and marketer of system simulation software. He holds an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto. A recipient of the J.E. Reid Memorial prize and a two-time winner of the RF Design magazine design contest, he is the author of RF Design Guide: Systems, Circuits, and Equations and Filters with Helical and Folded Helical Resonators, both published by Artech House.
