Describes factors that determine the behavior of a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode, with emphasis on developing a detailed understanding of DFB lasers and on the derivation of guidelines for their design. Early chapters deal with device physics and present both a lumped rate equation model and a longitudinal coupled-wave equation model. Later chapters cover aspects of laser performance such as current injection efficiency, nonlinear distortion, and fabrication and packing of DFB laser diodes. Much of the material is applicable to Fabry-Perot lasers. For those in device fabrication and design and optical-fiber communications. Assumes background in semiconductor and electromagnetic theory.
