The decade between the 1929 stock market crash and the outbreak of World War II was profoundly defined by political tensions and contradictions in both Europe and North America. In Italy, Germany and Soviet Russia leaders appeared whose agendas were skillfully disseminated by ideological propaganda about the New Man. This troubling and complex period is reflected in its art, where tradition and modernity clashed.By focusing on the period s fascination with science and biology, the authors compare two impacted areas: the arts, where the idea of metamorphosis produced an aesthetic revival; and politics, where the struggle to bring about a eugenic and racist renewal had unprecedented consequences for society.Organized thematically, this profusely illustrated publication takes the form of a story in nine episodes, thereby highlighting the period s enormous stylistic diversity and sociopolitical complexity. This complexity is reflected in the works of the artists who dealt with its dramatic upheavals according to their personal convictions, fears, hopes or disappointments. The international scope is reflected in the artists featured. They are from both Europe: (Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, August Sander, Alexander Rodchenko, Otto Dix, Lisette Model and Jean Arp) and from North America (Grant Wood, Jackson Pollock, Walker Evans, Alex Colville and Diego Rivera).

Originalpappband. Zustand: Gut. 91 S. : Ill. Einband leicht berieben. - Englisch. - On the heels of the Roaring Twenties, the 1930s, which spanned from the economic crisis of 1929 to the outbreak of the Second World War, was a dark decade. Political regimes - authoritarian or totalitarian - came to power or were consolidated and guided by leaders who often inspired their names Francoism in Spain, Stalinism in the Soviet Union, National Socialism in Germany, and Fascism in Italy. Beyond similar governmental mechanisms, these regimes shared an ideology: the will to create what they called the "New Man." At one extreme, this took the form of social re-education and the elimination of the "bourgeois" classes (USSR); at the other extreme, a racialist policy of elimination of peoples declared "degenerate" as well as those whose lives were deemed "unworthy" (Germany). This ideology, which directly affected the images and portrayals of man, naturally reached into the world of art. The era was represented by a healthy, vigorous, athletic, sporting, "eugenic" man, while the avant-garde currents of expressionism and surrealism were banned. On the one hand, "eternal" examples of "unsurpassable" Greek beauty were evoked; on the other, representations deemed unhealthy or degenerate were denounced. This decade began with a more or less innocent dream of the theme of the original egg, germination, the harmonious growth of a fabric both biological and social, but ended with the nightmarish discovery of the corpses in the concentration camps by the armies of liberation in 1945.
