This publication brings together 134 key works from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's permanent collection of almost 10,000 works of art, selected by the staff of the AGNS. It is divided into sections of essays and images that reflect the strengths of Atlantic Canada's largest art collection: Canadian Historical Painting, Contemporary Art, First Nations and Inuit Art, Folk Art, Ceramics, Historical Prints and Drawings, and International Painting and Sculpture. Each of the artworks illustrated is featured in full colour on its own page.
This book begins with an introduction by the AGNS founding director, Bernard Riordan, charting the history of the AGNS from its beginnings in the powder magazine of Halifax's Citadel to its permanent home in the city's downtown.
