The way we commonly use the words happiness and joy seems to make them the same thing, differing only in degrees of intensity. Thus we might say that the fans of a football team are happy when their team scores the first touchdown, but are joyful when it scores the last one that wins the game. This is how most people see it. I wish to challenge it as an error that can do great harm to a Christian's understanding of joy as Jesus teaches and exemplifies it. The Man of Sorrows was also the world's supreme Man of Joy, and he invites us to share it with him.
