John Donne was the most famous preacher of his time. Indeed, he has been called "one of the greatest preachers in the history of the English Church," and even "one of the greatest preachers of all time." His sermons are poetic prose of beauty and force.

Serious students of English literature recognize Donne's key importance in the development of English poetry. A recent admirer observed that "no poet has made greater poetry than Donne has on the theme of mutual love; he has no predecessors here and virtually no successors of any stature." Furthermore, the Holy Sonnets and other religious poetry have established Donne's reputation as the metaphysical poet, Donne drew his most important images or symbols from philosophy and theology, logically analyzing and imaginatively elucidating them in such a way that self-consciousness is enhanced and the significance of experience is clarified.
