Recently I was reading in a diary for the year 1886, kept by a ten-year-old boy who lived at that time in my old farmhouse. In his entry for January 9 he wrote, "Very cold. Everything is freezing up, I cut the beets for the cow, a bushel, and fed them to her." I became quite alarmed at the idea of one cow getting herself around a whole bushel of beets and skipped ahead to see if there was any further mention of the cow, especially in regard to her health. Everything must have been all right, for on January 10 he wrote, "I cut the beets for the old cow today and fed them to her." I should have had more faith in the boy, growing up on the farm and taught by his father how to care for the different kinds of livestock that they kept.
