Dr. Volkan writes the full narrative of his patient, also a physician, as he learns about him on their psychological journey-an exploration into the depths of one human mind. The reader will follow the course of treatment and witness the gradual unfolding of new information as the meaning of unconscious information and the nature of the patient's inner world, his conflicts, and their resolution become evident. We learn how the patient developed his concept of himself and others, and how his primitive representation of them hindered his efforts to relate fully to himself and other people. Dr. Volkan supplies details of the analysand's traumatized childhood, and the reappearance in analysis of his infantile pathogenic fantasies. He had a fear of a black panther that symbolized his mother and her genitalia, but at the same time he had a peculiar longing for it. His ultimate "taming" of the panther and the consequent disappearance of his fear is described. His mother, who had been adopted as a child, had conveyed the fantasy that her natural father was a nobleman. However, the patient sometimes feared that she had come from humble stock, possibly from gypsy parents. Accordingly, he was sensitized to the difference between the things, people, and aspects of himself that he categorized as "roses," that is, valuable and pleasing, and those he saw as worthless, common "dandelions." This is a moving chronicle of his becoming able to "cross" dandelions with roses, and his hard-won and surprising answer to the question, "What do you get when you cross a dandelion with a rose?"
