Dressage?classical horsemanship?has enduring appeal because it combines athletic grace with the fascination of the horse-and-rider relationship at its most highly developed. The past decade has seen rapid growth in the number of serious dressage riders, and from this growth has emerged the rider's need to know more about dressage as an art and as a technique. Training Strategies for Dressage Riders by Charles de Kunffy is the companion volume to his recently published The Athletic Development of the Dressage Horse. In that book, he assists riders with the gymnasticizing of their horses. Now, in this book, he hopes to further those efforts by helping riders with strategies that can improve their equitation and enrich their training plans. To that end, Charles de Kunffy addresses such topics as the art of classical equitation, the development of the rider's seat and aids, longitudinal flexion, lateral bending, the development of the basic gaits, the insubordination of horses to riders, and the whole matter of clinics, competitions, and judging. De Kunffy believes that "horsemanship is a science and very much a matter of scholarship and intellect. It is an art, depending deeply on the spirit in which it is practiced and displayed. Practiced correctly, it is a sport that improves athletically both the human and the equine body." This book goes a long way toward enabling riders to do just that.
