Ralph Bartholomew Jr. was one of the most highly regarded commercial photographers in the thirties and forties. His work was not until now regarded as art due to the critical atmosphere of the times which created a chasm between art and commerce.
Perhaps nothing save cinema has had as much influence on the iconography of our age as advertising. As one of America's leading commercial photographers for over three decades, Ralph Bartholomew Jr. had a tremendous impact on popular imagery, and in turn on the popular imagination as well. Though he never sought to be either a household name or an artist, Bartholomew created advertisements -- during the 30's, 40's and 50's -- that in many ways defined the golden era of America's emerging culture of mass consumerism. Retail Fictions celebrates the highly crafted and often film-noir creations of this American original, who fused the experimental and artistic potentials of photography in order to make an impression among the onslaught of ads. It is published in conjunction with a major travelling exhibition of his work

Originalbroschur. Zustand: Sehr gut. 148 S. Gebraucht, aber gut erhalten. - WHETHER CATEGORIZED as fine art, documentary, or commercial, photographs are a constant in the visual experience of contemporary life. So pervasive are commercial photographs that they are rarely afforded more than cursory recognition. With the benefit of historical and contextual perspectives, a fuller understanding of their significance is possible. Retail Fictions: The Commercial Photography of Ralph Bartholomew Jr. examines the work of a single photographer who expanded the vocabulary of commercial image-making while setting new standards for technology and innovation. Tim B. Wride, assistant curator of photography and organizer of this exhibition, demonstrates how Bartholomew masterfully manipulated emerging technologies, issues of identity, and references to popular culture to create visually arresting photographs. He also argues that Bartholomew's work- done for prestigious agencies and exponentially reproduced through the gargantuan circulation of popular magazines - exercised enormous influence and occasioned considerable imitation.
